Dairy is a very nutritional, healthy and natural food, if you’re a baby calf!
Mother's milk is designed for feeding growing babies, cows milk is designed for baby calves to support their growth into adult cows and bulls. Cow's milk provides the calf with the nutrients to double their birth weight in one and a half months and to grow up into a 200kg youngster in just a year. Cows' milk is much higher in protein than requirements for humans and provides everything calves require for rapid growth. Cow milk also contains her antibodies and hormones and may contain chemical toxins she has ingested such as exhaust fumes, herbicides, pesticides and chemical medications such as antibiotics, organophosphate dips and drenches. Pesticides and other chemicals that end up in the cow's fat stores are passed on in the dairy fat.
Dairy products contain no complex carbohydrates or fibre but instead are packed full of saturated fats and cholesterol. Because of this, dairy products have been linked to allergies, heart disease, prostate cancer, breast cancer, acne and obesity. (Please note that although these links go to PETA websites, we do not support PETA or any other welfarist campaigns. We support the abolitionist approach to animal rights, which you can find out more about here or at abolitionistapproach.com)
Dairy companies continually promote dairy products for calcium and bone health. However dairy products are actually quite low in calcium, compared to foods like soy milk, almonds, nuts, apricots, broccoli, figs, and tofu. In fact, one serving of sesame seeds has almost double the calcium as a glass of cows' milk and one serving of soymilk has almost 100 milligrams more calcium then a serving of cows' milk.
Calcium can easily be consumed by eating more fresh green vegetables, grains and nuts. Calcium deficiency can be associated with those consuming high amounts of animal protein, or high fibre diets. Dairy products are one of the leading causes of food allergies. It is the proteins in dairy foods which trigger many allergic reactions. Many studies have shown allergies to dairy food causing irritability, restlessness, hyperactivity, bloating, diarrhoea, headaches, lack of energy, nasal stuffiness, sinusitis, asthma, rashes, eczema and hives.
As well as killing you, dairy and other animal products kill billions of animals per year. Click here to learn more. Animal products are clearly not neccesary to be healthy, and it is morally wrong to kill animals just to satisfy your taste buds.
So fulfil your moral obligations to nonhuman animals by going vegan!
