Late 2007 - an investigation at Morinsville (Waikato) Stockyards uncovered typical conditions. Emaciated steers and cows were found in over-crowed, filthy conditions. Animals that could not stand (the industry refers to them as downers) were hit with sticks and had their tails yanked until they stood. Investigators witnessed downer animals trampled and stood on for long periods of time by other animals that were unable to move away due to the crowded conditions. Animals stood for hours under hot sun with no shelter or water provided. Images courtesy of Meat Free Media and Open Rescue
